This private Alamein day trip from Alexandria follows the coast road west to the desert where the two battles of El Alamein were fought in 1942. With your own guide and driver, you visit the war museum and the three national memorials at a pace that suits you, whether you are tracing a relative, studying the North African campaign or simply want to understand why this quiet stretch of coast mattered so much.
The drive takes about two hours each way, and your guide uses it to set the scene: Rommel and Montgomery, the minefields, the supply lines and the soldiers from Britain, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Germany and Italy who fought here. The cemeteries are calm, well-kept places, so the day has a reflective tone. Lunch is not included, but your guide can stop at a simple local restaurant on the way back.

Itinerary
08:00 – Pickup in Alexandria
Your guide and driver collect you from your hotel in a private air-conditioned car or van. The road runs west past Agami and the North Coast resorts, with the sea on one side and open desert on the other. Your guide introduces the campaign so you arrive with the main names, dates and front lines already clear.
10:00 – El Alamein War Museum
Start at the museum, opened in 1965 and later extended, where halls dedicated to each army display uniforms, weapons, personal letters, maps and dioramas of the battles. Outside, a yard of tanks, artillery and vehicles gives a sense of the scale of the fighting. Allow around an hour here with your guide.
11:15 – Alamein War Cemetery
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery holds more than 7,000 graves in neat rows of pale headstones, many inscribed by families. The Alamein Memorial at the entrance lists thousands more with no known grave. Take time to walk quietly; if you are looking for a particular name, send it to us in advance and we will help locate it.
12:30 – German War Memorial
Drive a few kilometres west to the German memorial, an octagonal stone building on a ridge above the sea that resembles a desert fort. Inside, the names of around 4,000 German soldiers are recorded around a central courtyard. Your guide explains how the battle line ran across the landscape you see from the walls.
13:15 – Italian Memorial at Tel el-Eisa
The Italian shrine is a tall white tower with a chapel and wall niches holding the remains of Italian soldiers, sailors and airmen. A small museum room displays documents and equipment. It is a peaceful place facing the Mediterranean and a fitting end to the visits before the drive back.
14:30 – Return to Alexandria
Head back east along the coast road, with an optional stop for a late lunch at a local restaurant at your own cost. Your guide is happy to answer questions or suggest books and films on the campaign. Expect to be back at your hotel around 16:30 to 17:00, depending on traffic.
Good to know: The cemeteries and memorials are free to enter and are places of remembrance; modest clothing and quiet behaviour are expected. The museum may close on some public holidays.

How far is El Alamein from Alexandria?
El Alamein is about 110 km west of central Alexandria. The drive along the coast road usually takes around two hours each way, a little less from hotels in the west of the city. The whole day, including about four hours at the museum and memorials, lasts roughly eight to nine hours.
Can you help me find a relative’s grave?
Yes. Send us the soldier’s name, unit and, if possible, the grave reference from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website when you book. Your guide will take you straight to the right plot. Families often bring a small photo or note to leave, which is perfectly acceptable at the cemetery.
Is this tour suitable for people with limited mobility?
Mostly, yes. The museum and cemeteries are on fairly level ground, with some sand and steps at the German and Italian memorials. The vehicle can park close to each entrance, and because the tour is private, your guide can shorten walks and add rest stops whenever you need them.
Can I combine El Alamein with a beach or another stop?
Yes. Because the tour is private, we can add a swim stop at a North Coast beach in summer, or shorten the cemetery visits and continue sightseeing in Alexandria on the way back. Tell us when you book so we can quote and plan the timing properly.
