Tour Overview
This 12 day Egypt tour is for travellers who want to see the country properly, not just tick off the headline sites. It starts with the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then heads north to Mediterranean Alexandria, a city with a very different, Greco-Roman character. From there you fly south to Aswan, travel to the temples of Abu Simbel and sail down the Nile to Luxor, stopping at Kom Ombo and Edfu on the way.
After a week of temples and tombs, the final part of the trip slows right down. You drive across the Eastern Desert to Hurghada for four nights by the Red Sea, with time to swim, snorkel the coral reefs or simply do nothing at all. It is a natural way to absorb everything you have seen, and to come home rested rather than needing another holiday.
Throughout, a private Egyptologist guides you at each stage and a private driver handles every transfer. Cairo and Luxor hotels are 4★, the Nile cruise ship is 5★ and the Hurghada beach resort is 4★ on an all-inclusive basis. Hurghada airport has direct international flights to many European cities, and if you need to fly home from Cairo we can add a domestic flight.
Highlights
- Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum with a private Egyptologist
- Full day in Alexandria: catacombs, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and Qaitbay Citadel
- Abu Simbel’s twin temples, reached by road from Aswan
- 3-night Aswan to Luxor cruise via Kom Ombo, Edfu and the Esna lock
- Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Luxor Temple
- Four nights to unwind on the Red Sea coast in Hurghada
Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrive in Cairo
Our representative meets you at Cairo International Airport, assists with the visa and arrival formalities and escorts you to your private air-conditioned vehicle. Transfer to your 4★ hotel and settle in after the journey. Depending on your arrival time you may want an early night, as tomorrow begins at the Pyramids. Your guide will be in touch to confirm the plan for the coming days and answer any questions about the trip.
Meals: None
Day 2 – Pyramids, Sphinx & Grand Egyptian Museum
Begin on the Giza Plateau with the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and the panoramic viewpoint over all three. Walk down to the Sphinx and the granite Valley Temple beside it. After lunch, spend the afternoon at the Grand Egyptian Museum, close to the plateau, where your guide leads you through the Tutankhamun galleries and the monumental Grand Staircase lined with royal statues from across three thousand years.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Day 3 – Day Trip to Alexandria
Drive north to Alexandria, around three hours by the desert road. Explore the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, where Egyptian and Roman styles mix in a striking underground tomb, and Pompey’s Pillar, a red granite column standing on the ancient Serapeum hill. After a seafood lunch near the harbour, visit the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Qaitbay Citadel, built on the site of the famous Pharos lighthouse. Return to Cairo in the evening.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Day 4 – Fly to Aswan, Philae & Board the Cruise
Take a morning flight to Aswan and transfer to your 5★ Nile cruise ship. After lunch on board, visit the High Dam for views over Lake Nasser, the Unfinished Obelisk lying in its granite quarry, and Philae Temple, reached by a short motorboat ride to its island. In the late afternoon, sail by felucca around Elephantine Island and past the Aga Khan Mausoleum on the west bank. Dinner and overnight on board in Aswan.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5 – Abu Simbel & Kom Ombo
An early start for the drive south through the desert to Abu Simbel, around three and a half hours each way. Ramesses II’s Great Temple and the smaller temple of Queen Nefertari were cut into the cliff and later moved block by block to save them from Lake Nasser, and standing before them is one of the highlights of any trip. Return to the ship for a late lunch as it sails north to Kom Ombo for a sunset visit to its double temple.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6 – Edfu & the Esna Lock
The ship reaches Edfu overnight. After breakfast, take a horse-drawn carriage to the Temple of Horus, the most complete temple in Egypt, with its roof, pylon and inner sanctuary still intact. Return on board and spend the rest of the day sailing north, passing through the lock at Esna, where traders often row out alongside the ship to sell textiles. Arrive in Luxor in the evening for dinner and overnight on board.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7 – Luxor West Bank & East Bank
Disembark after breakfast and cross to the West Bank. Visit the Valley of the Kings, entering three royal tombs, then the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. After lunch and check-in at your 4★ Luxor hotel, continue to Karnak Temple, the largest religious site of the ancient world, and end the day at Luxor Temple as the floodlights come on. A balloon flight at dawn can be added, subject to weather.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Day 8 – Drive to Hurghada
After a relaxed breakfast, your private driver takes you across the Eastern Desert to the Red Sea coast, a journey of around four hours with a break along the way. Check in to your 4★ all-inclusive beach resort in Hurghada in time for a late lunch. The rest of the afternoon is free to swim, lie by the pool or watch the sun set over the desert mountains behind the coast.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 9 – Free Day in Hurghada
A full day at leisure. The Red Sea has some of the most accessible coral reefs in the world, and many resorts have a house reef or a jetty for snorkelling. If you want to do more, we can arrange an optional boat trip to Giftun Island, a quad bike desert safari, or diving with a licensed centre. Otherwise, simply enjoy the resort’s facilities and a well-earned rest after a busy week of sightseeing.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 10 – Free Day in Hurghada
Another free day by the sea. Hurghada’s marina is a pleasant place for an evening stroll, with cafés and restaurants along the waterfront, and the older El Dahar district has a local market where you can pick up spices and souvenirs at everyday prices. Our local team remains on call throughout your beach stay should you need help booking excursions, a taxi or anything else during your time on the coast.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 11 – Free Day in Hurghada
Your last full day on the Red Sea. Many guests use it for one final snorkel, a spa treatment or a lazy afternoon by the pool. It is also a good moment to reflect on the journey, from the Pyramids and Alexandria’s catacombs to Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings. Your representative will confirm your departure time and pick-up details for tomorrow during the day.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 12 – Departure from Hurghada
Enjoy breakfast and any remaining time at the resort. Your private driver collects you and transfers you to Hurghada International Airport, around 20 to 30 minutes from most resorts, for your flight home. If your international flight leaves from Cairo, we will instead book a short domestic flight from Hurghada and arrange a meet and assist at Cairo airport for your connection, at an additional cost.
Meals: Breakfast
Good to know: Abu Simbel road timings follow the police convoy schedule and the ship’s sailing time. The tour ends in Hurghada; a flight to Cairo can be added.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is twelve days too much for a first visit to Egypt?
For most people it is ideal. Shorter trips usually skip Alexandria and Abu Simbel, or squeeze them into very long days. This itinerary spreads the sightseeing across eight days and then gives you four nights at the beach, so you leave feeling rested rather than exhausted. If you prefer more history and less beach, we can swap Hurghada nights for extra time in Luxor.
How long is the trip to Abu Simbel?
By road it is around three and a half hours each way from Aswan, with an early departure so you reach the temples before the midday heat. You spend around two hours on site with your guide. If you would rather not do the drive, a return flight from Aswan can be arranged for an extra charge, subject to availability and the flight schedule on the day.
Can we choose a 5★ resort in Hurghada?
Yes. We work with a range of beach resorts and can upgrade you to a 5★ property, a hotel with a strong house reef for snorkelling, or an adults-only resort. Send us your preferences and we will quote the difference. Upgrades in Cairo and Luxor are also possible if you would like a Nile or Pyramid view room.
Is it safe to swim and snorkel in Hurghada?
Hurghada is a well-established resort area and swimming at hotel beaches is generally straightforward. Follow lifeguard advice, wear reef-safe sun cream and protective shoes where corals reach the shore, and never touch the coral or marine life. Sea conditions vary with the wind, so on some days boat trips may be rescheduled for safety.
What time of year is best for this itinerary?
October to April gives warm, comfortable sightseeing weather in Cairo, Aswan and Luxor, while the Red Sea stays pleasant for swimming most of the year, though it can feel cool in January and February. Summer is very hot in the south, but the beach is at its best, so a summer trip suits travellers who are happy with early starts.
