Tour Overview

Alexandria comes alive after sunset, when families stroll the seafront and the cafés fill up. This private Alexandria by night tour shows you the city at its liveliest, with your own guide and driver, hotel pickup and stops chosen to suit you. It is a relaxed four hours rather than a history lesson, and a good choice for your first or last evening in the city.

You drive along the curve of the corniche, stop for photos at Stanley Bridge, walk the plaza in front of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and finish by the Eastern Harbour beneath the floodlit walls of Qaitbay Citadel. Along the way, your guide shares stories of the city’s Greek, Italian and Egyptian past, and can take you to an old-style café for coffee or dessert at your own cost.

Highlights

  • Drive the length of the illuminated corniche
  • Photo stop at Stanley Bridge and the bay
  • Bibliotheca Alexandrina plaza lit up at night
  • Qaitbay Citadel and the fishing boats of the Eastern Harbour
  • Time for a seaside café or ice cream with your guide
  • Private car and guide, flexible stops

Itinerary

18:30 – Hotel pickup and corniche drive

Your guide and driver meet you at your hotel as the light fades. Head along the corniche, the 15 km seafront road that links the eastern beaches with the old city, passing Montaza, Sidi Bishr and San Stefano as the lights come on across the bay.

19:15 – Stanley Bridge

Stop at Stanley Bridge, built in 2001 with its four pavilion towers, for one of the best night views of the coast. Walk along the seafront here, where local families gather in the cool evening air, and take photos of the bridge reflected in the bay.

20:00 – Bibliotheca Alexandrina plaza

Continue to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, whose tilted round roof and carved granite wall are floodlit at night. Walk around the plaza and the planetarium sphere while your guide explains how the ancient library stood close to this spot.

20:45 – Eastern Harbour and Qaitbay Citadel

Drive past the old palaces and hotels of the downtown seafront to the Eastern Harbour, where fishing boats bob below the floodlit walls of Qaitbay Citadel. The citadel is closed at night, but the walk along the breakwater and the views back to the city are the best part.

21:30 – Café stop and return

End with a stop at a traditional café or ice-cream shop, popular with local families, before your driver takes you back to your hotel at around 22:30. Food and drinks at this stop are paid locally, and your guide can help you order.

Good to know: Sites are seen from the outside at night; museums and the citadel are closed in the evening. In winter, sea spray can close parts of the seafront walk on windy nights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Alexandria safe to walk around at night?

The corniche and the areas we visit are busy with local families until late, and your guide stays with you throughout. As in any big city, keep valuables out of sight and watch the traffic, which is heavy on the seafront road. Crossing with your guide is the easiest way.

Do we go inside any sites?

No. Museums, the library and Qaitbay Citadel close before the tour starts, so this is an outdoor evening tour of lit-up landmarks, seafront walks and café life. If you would like to see the sites inside, combine it with our daytime Alexandria city tour.

Can we have dinner during the tour?

Yes. Many guests like to finish with a fish dinner by the Eastern Harbour. Your guide will recommend a restaurant and help you order; the bill is paid directly at the restaurant. Allow an extra hour, which we can add without changing the price if you tell us in advance.

Can we start later or earlier?

Yes. The tour is private, so pickup can be any time from sunset onwards. In summer, sunset is around 19:45 and the seafront is liveliest late in the evening, so many guests prefer a 20:00 start.
