Tour Overview

Two countries, two ancient wonders and one unforgettable desert, all in a single week. This private Cairo Petra Wadi Rum tour starts with three nights in Cairo, where your Egyptologist guide takes you to the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum, now fully open with the complete Tutankhamun collection. You will also meet the royal mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and wander the lanes of Old Cairo and Khan el-Khalili before a short flight takes you across to Jordan.

In Jordan the pace changes. You spend two nights in Wadi Musa, right at the gate of Petra, so you can enter early and give the rose-red city a full, unhurried day. Then the road leads south to Wadi Rum, where a Bedouin driver shows you sandstone cliffs, rock bridges and wide red valleys by 4×4 before dinner and a night under the stars in a desert camp.

We keep the logistics simple. Your Jordan entry visa and Petra ticket are included, every transfer is private, and the last day is flexible: float in the Dead Sea if your flight allows, head straight to Amman airport, or fly back to Cairo. Petra involves a lot of walking on sand and stone, so this trip suits travellers who are comfortable on their feet for several hours.

Highlights

  • Stand beside the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx with a private Egyptologist
  • See Tutankhamun’s treasures at the fully open Grand Egyptian Museum
  • Walk the Siq to the Treasury and climb to Petra’s Monastery
  • Jeep tour through Wadi Rum and a night in a Bedouin camp
  • Jordan entry visa and Petra ticket included
  • Optional float in the Dead Sea on your final day

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Cairo

Our representative meets you in the arrivals hall at Cairo International Airport, helps at the visa counter if you need it, and walks you to your private car. The drive to your 4★ hotel takes about 45 minutes, depending on traffic. The rest of the day is free to rest after your flight. In the evening your guide will be in touch to talk through the week, answer any questions and confirm tomorrow’s pick-up time, so you start the tour knowing exactly what comes next.

Day 2 – Pyramids, Sphinx & Grand Egyptian Museum

After breakfast your Egyptologist guide collects you for the Giza Plateau. Stand at the base of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, take in all three pyramids from the panoramic viewpoint, and meet the Great Sphinx beside the Valley Temple. Going inside a pyramid is possible with an extra ticket. After lunch nearby, spend the afternoon at the Grand Egyptian Museum, now fully open, where the Tutankhamun galleries show the young king’s treasures together in one place. You are back at your hotel by early evening.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 3 – Royal Mummies, Old Cairo & Khan el-Khalili

Today explores the city’s many layers. Begin at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, where the royal mummies rest in a calm, softly lit gallery. Continue to Coptic Cairo to see the Hanging Church and the quiet lanes around Ben Ezra Synagogue. After lunch, visit the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, with wide views over the rooftops on a clear day. Finish in Khan el-Khalili bazaar, with time to browse, bargain and sip mint tea at a traditional café.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4 – Fly to Amman and Drive to Petra

A morning transfer takes you to Cairo airport for the flight to Amman, which takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Your Jordanian driver meets you on arrival, and your entry visa is already arranged as part of the tour. Head south on the Desert Highway towards Petra, a drive of around three hours with a break on the way. Check in to your 4★ hotel in Wadi Musa, the small town at Petra’s entrance, and enjoy a relaxed evening before tomorrow’s big day on foot.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 5 – Full Day in Petra

Set off early with your local guide to stay ahead of the heat and the crowds. Walk through the Siq, a winding gorge more than a kilometre long, until the Treasury appears through the gap in the rock. Continue past the Street of Facades, the Theatre and the Royal Tombs. If you are feeling strong, climb roughly 800 rock-cut steps to the Monastery, which many travellers rate even above the Treasury. Expect a lot of walking on sand and stone, so comfortable shoes really matter.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 6 – Little Petra & Wadi Rum Desert Camp

After breakfast, visit Little Petra, a smaller Nabataean site with carved halls and a fraction of the visitors. Then drive about two hours south to Wadi Rum, a desert of red sand and towering sandstone mountains. Climb into a 4×4 with a Bedouin driver for a jeep tour of rock bridges, ancient inscriptions and dunes, pausing to watch the sun go down. Spend the night at a Bedouin camp with a traditional dinner, often slow-cooked in an underground oven, beneath a sky full of stars.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 7 – Dead Sea (Optional) & Departure

Wake early to see the desert at dawn and enjoy breakfast at camp. If your flight time allows, drive north to the Dead Sea, about four hours away, for an optional float in the salty water using a resort day pass, then continue roughly an hour to Queen Alia International Airport in Amman. If you would rather, go straight to the airport instead. You can fly home from Amman or take a flight back to Cairo. Tell us when you book and we will plan the timings around it.

Meals: Breakfast

Good to know: The Jordan visa is covered by the Jordan Pass only if you stay at least 3 nights in Jordan, which this itinerary does. Your passport needs at least 6 months’ validity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy a Jordan Pass?

No, you do not need to buy one yourself. We buy the Jordan Pass in your name, which covers your Jordan entry visa, Petra and Wadi Rum entry, because you stay three nights in Jordan. We only need a clear passport copy when you book. Your Egypt visa is separate; UK citizens and many others can get it online in advance or on arrival at Cairo airport.

How fit do I need to be for Petra?

You should be happy walking for several hours. The main trail from the visitor centre to the Treasury and on to the Royal Tombs is several kilometres over sand, gravel and uneven stone, and the climb to the Monastery adds around 800 steps. You can go at your own pace, skip the Monastery, or hire a donkey or buggy for some sections.

What is the Wadi Rum camp like?

It is a proper Bedouin-style camp with private tents or cabins, beds, and shared or private bathrooms depending on the camp. Dinner is usually a traditional zarb, meat and vegetables slow-cooked in a pit under the sand. Evenings are peaceful, and on a clear night the stars are spectacular. Desert nights can be cold from November to March, so pack a warm layer.

How do I pay for this tour?

Because this package includes hotels, a desert camp and a flight between Cairo and Amman, we ask for a deposit to secure those bookings once you confirm. The balance is then paid on arrival. We will send you a written breakdown of exactly what is held and what is due, so there are no surprises when you land.

When is the best time to do this trip?

March to May and late September to November are the most comfortable months, with warm days that suit long walks in Petra and the desert. Summer is very hot in both countries, especially for the Petra hike, though early starts help. Winter brings mild days in Cairo but cold nights in Petra and Wadi Rum, and rain is possible.
