Tour Overview

A camel ride in Luxor is a gentle way to see the countryside of the West Bank, away from the temples and the traffic. With a local handler leading the way, you ride for about an hour along farm tracks, past mud-brick houses, sugar-cane and clover fields and palm-lined canals, towards the desert edge below the Theban hills.

We collect you from your hotel or cruise boat, drive you across the Nile and introduce you to your camel and handler. The pace is slow and steady, so no experience is needed. Most guests choose the late afternoon for softer light and a sunset over the hills, while early mornings are cooler in summer. It is a simple, local experience and an easy add-on to any Luxor stay.

Highlights

  • About an hour on camelback on Luxor’s West Bank
  • Mud-brick villages, sugar-cane fields and irrigation canals
  • Views of the Theban hills at the edge of the desert
  • Sunset or early-morning ride options
  • Friendly local camel handler for each group
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off included

Itinerary

15:30 – Pickup in Luxor

Your driver collects you from your hotel or cruise boat about two hours before sunset and drives over the bridge to the West Bank, around 30 minutes. For a morning ride, pickup is usually around 07:00. Pickup times change with the season.

16:00 – Meet your camel

At the camel stables near the villages of the West Bank, meet your handler and camel. The handler shows you how to sit and hold on while the camel kneels and stands, the only slightly bumpy moments of the ride, and helps everyone into the saddle.

16:15 – Ride through the countryside

Ride for about an hour along tracks between fields and canals, past farmers at work, children on donkeys and houses painted with pilgrimage scenes. The route heads towards the desert edge, with views of the hills that hide the Valley of the Kings, and the handler stops for photos whenever you like.

17:15 – Sunset and return

Watch the sun go down behind the hills before riding back to the stables. Your driver then takes you back across the Nile to your hotel or boat, arriving around 18:00 to 18:30 depending on the season.

Good to know: Camels are led by local handlers and walk at a slow pace. Riders over about 110 kg, pregnant women and people with back problems should ask us before booking. Routes vary slightly with field work and the season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need riding experience?

No. The camels are calm and used to beginners, and the handler leads them at a walk throughout. The only tricky part is when the camel stands up or kneels down, which moves you forwards and backwards; just lean back and hold the saddle as the handler shows you.

Can children ride a camel?

Yes, children from about five or six can ride, either on their own camel led by the handler or sharing with an adult. Ask us for a child price before you book. Long trousers and closed shoes make the ride more comfortable.

Are the camels well looked after?

We work with local families who keep their camels for a living and care for them well. The rides are short and slow, at the cooler times of day. If you ever have concerns about an animal’s welfare, tell us and we will act on it.

Can I ride a horse instead?

Yes. Horse rides along the same West Bank routes can be arranged for confident riders at a similar price. Let us know when you book, together with your riding experience, so we can match you with a suitable horse.
