Tour Overview

Two days is all it takes to swap Cairo’s traffic for one of the strangest landscapes on Earth. This White Desert camping trip heads south-west into the Western Desert to Bahariya Oasis, where you switch to a 4×4 with a Bedouin driver who knows these tracks by heart. From there the scenery changes by the hour: black volcanic hills, a ridge glittering with quartz, golden sandstone canyons, and finally a plain of snow-white chalk sculpted by the wind into mushrooms, arches and towers.

You sleep at a simple camp sheltered beside the rocks. Your crew cooks dinner over the fire, usually grilled chicken, rice and vegetables, followed by sweet Bedouin tea. With almost no light pollution the stars are extraordinary on a clear night. Mattresses, blankets and sleeping bags are provided, and you can sleep in a tent or out in the open. Facilities are basic, with no showers, which is part of the experience.

The trip is private, so the pace is yours. Be ready for long drives: Cairo to Bahariya takes around 4.5 to 5 hours each way, with stops for coffee and stretches. October to April is the most comfortable season. Winter nights can drop close to freezing, so bring warm layers, while summer days are very hot but nights remain pleasant.

Highlights

  • Private road transfer from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis and back
  • 4×4 safari across the volcanic hills of the Black Desert
  • Crystal Mountain and the sandstone valley of El Agabat
  • Sunset among the chalk ‘mushroom’ and ‘chicken’ rocks of the White Desert
  • Bedouin-style dinner by the campfire and a night under a huge desert sky
  • Sunrise in the desert and a soak in a natural spring near Bawiti

Itinerary

Day 1 – Morning: Cairo to Bahariya Oasis

Your driver collects you from your Cairo or Giza hotel at around 7:00. The road leaves the city behind and runs through open desert, with a rest stop at a roadside café along the way. You reach Bawiti, the main town of Bahariya Oasis, around midday. Here you meet your Bedouin driver and guide, transfer your bags to the 4×4 and sit down to a home-style lunch before heading into the desert. Keep your passport handy, as there are routine police checkpoints on the route.

Meals: Lunch

Day 1 – Afternoon: Black Desert, Crystal Mountain & El Agabat

Driving south, the sand darkens as you enter the Black Desert, where cone-shaped hills are capped with dark volcanic rock. Climb one for a wide view across the plain. Next comes Crystal Mountain, a low ridge of quartz and calcite crystals that sparkle in the sun; please look but leave them in place. Then the 4×4 drops into the valley of El Agabat, a maze of pale cliffs and golden dunes that feels like a film set and makes a great spot for photos.

Day 1 – Evening: White Desert sunset and camp

Late in the afternoon you reach the White Desert protected area. Wander among the famous chalk formations, including the well-known mushroom and chicken rocks, as the low sun turns them from white to gold and pink. Your crew sets up camp in a sheltered spot while you watch the light fade. Dinner is cooked over the fire, followed by tea, conversation and stargazing. Desert foxes sometimes come close to camp after dark, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Meals: Dinner

Day 2 – Desert sunrise, hot spring and return to Cairo

Wake early for sunrise over the chalk towers, one of the quietest moments of the trip. After breakfast at camp, the 4×4 takes a different route back towards Bahariya, stopping at more formations along the way. Near Bawiti you can relax in a natural spring, so pack swimwear, before lunch in the oasis. In the early afternoon you transfer back to your private car for the drive to Cairo, arriving at your hotel at around 19:00 to 20:00, depending on traffic.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Good to know: The camp has no showers or toilets. Winter nights can fall close to freezing, and the White Desert protected-area fee is included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is camping in the White Desert safe?

Yes. The White Desert is a well-travelled protected area and our Bedouin crews have years of experience there. Permits are arranged in advance, the route has police checkpoints, and you are never alone in the desert. Your crew carries water, food, a first-aid kit and a mobile phone, and vehicles travel on established tracks. Always carry your passport, as officials may ask to see it.

What are the toilet and washing facilities like?

Very basic. There are no showers or built-in toilets at the camp; you find a discreet spot among the rocks, and the crew provides water for washing hands and brushing teeth. Bring wet wipes, a small torch and a bag for your rubbish. If that sounds too rough, ask us about adding a hotel night in Bahariya instead of the camp.

How cold does it get at night?

From December to February, desert nights can fall to around 0–5°C, and even in spring and autumn they feel cool after sunset. Sleeping bags and blankets are provided, but bring a warm jacket, a hat, socks and layers you can sleep in. From May to September days are very hot and nights are mild, so light clothing and plenty of sun protection are more important.

Can children join the desert camping trip?

Yes, children usually love the adventure, especially the dunes and campfire. The main challenge is the long drive, around 4.5 to 5 hours each way between Cairo and Bahariya, so it suits children who travel well in a car. We recommend it for ages six and up. Let us know their ages when booking and we will pack extra blankets and kid-friendly food.

What should I pack?

Pack light in a soft bag: warm layers, a jacket, comfortable closed shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, swimwear for the spring, a torch or head torch, personal medication, wet wipes, toilet paper and a power bank, as there is no electricity at camp. Leave large suitcases at your Cairo hotel. Cash in Egyptian pounds is useful for snacks and tips.
