Tour Overview
This private Bahariya Oasis day trip from Cairo is for travellers who want to see the White Desert but cannot spare a night. It is a very long day, with around four and a half hours of driving each way, but it brings you to some of the strangest landscapes in Egypt: black volcanic hills, a ridge of glittering quartz and white chalk towers carved by the wind.
You leave Cairo before dawn with your own guide and driver. In Bawiti, the main town of Bahariya, you see the Golden Mummies, gilded Greco-Roman burials found in the oasis in the 1990s, and have lunch among the palms. A 4×4 then takes you south through the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain to the White Desert, where you walk among the famous mushroom and chicken-shaped rocks before heading home.
If you can stay longer, a night camping in the White Desert is far more relaxed and lets you see the rocks at sunset and under the stars; ask for our two-day camping trip. The day trip remains a good option for fit travellers on a tight schedule who are happy to spend much of the day on the road.

Itinerary
05:00 – Early pickup in Cairo
Your guide and driver collect you from your hotel in Cairo or Giza. The road west to Bahariya runs for about 370 km through open desert and takes around four hours, with a coffee stop at a rest house on the way. You can sleep in the car for much of this first leg.
09:30 – Bawiti and the Golden Mummies
Arrive in Bawiti, the oasis capital. Visit the small antiquities museum, where several of the Golden Mummies are displayed with their painted, gilded masks. Your guide explains how the Valley of the Golden Mummies was discovered and what it tells us about life in the oasis under Greek and Roman rule.
10:30 – Black Desert and Crystal Mountain
Switch to a 4×4 and drive south. The Black Desert is a plain of orange sand dotted with cone-shaped hills capped in dark volcanic stone; climb one for a wide view. Further on, Crystal Mountain is a low rock ridge full of quartz crystals that catch the sun. Please leave the crystals in place.
12:30 – Lunch in the desert
Stop for lunch at a desert camp or a simple oasis restaurant, with grilled chicken, rice, vegetables, salads and bread, followed by sweet tea. It is a good chance to rest before the White Desert. Vegetarian food is always available; please mention any dietary needs when booking.

13:30 – White Desert National Park
Drive off-road into the White Desert, where wind has shaped the white chalk into towers, arches and the famous Mushroom and Chicken rocks. Spend time walking and taking photos in the bright light. Your driver may take you over a few small dunes on the way out.
16:00 – Return to Cairo
Leave the protected area and drive back to Bawiti, then switch to your air-conditioned vehicle for the long road to Cairo. Expect to arrive at your hotel between 21:00 and 22:00, depending on traffic and stops.
Good to know: This is a very long day with around nine hours on the road; it is not recommended for young children. The White Desert is about 5 hours from Cairo, so time there is limited; an overnight camping trip is the better choice if you can spare a night.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the drive from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis?
Around four hours each way from Cairo to Bawiti on a good desert road, plus about an hour more to reach the White Desert by 4×4. With stops and sightseeing, the whole day lasts 15 to 17 hours, so it suits travellers who are comfortable with a long day in the car.
Is a day trip worth it, or should I stay overnight?
A day trip shows you the highlights if you are short of time, but you spend more of the day driving than exploring. Staying one night in the White Desert lets you see the rocks at sunset and sunrise, sleep under the stars and travel more slowly. If you can spare a night, we recommend it.
Is the tour private?
Yes. Your guide, driver and 4×4 are for your party only, so you can set the pace and stop for photos whenever you like. Larger groups use more than one 4×4. The only people you share the desert with are other visitors at the main rock formations.
What should I bring?
Bring comfortable clothes, closed shoes, a hat, sunglasses and plenty of sun cream. A warm layer is useful for the early start and late return, especially in winter. Bring your passport, as there are police checkpoints on the desert road, and a bag to keep sand out of your camera.
