Egypt is one of the most rewarding trips you can take from the UK: the Pyramids, the temples of Luxor, a Nile cruise and the Red Sea, all within a few hours of each other. This guide covers how to plan a private Egypt tour package from the UK, from how long you need to what is included.
How long do you need?
- 4 to 5 days: Cairo and the Pyramids, or Cairo plus Luxor. Good for a long weekend or a first taste. See our 4-day Cairo short break or 5-day Cairo and Luxor break.
- 7 to 8 days: the classic trip: Cairo, a Nile cruise between Aswan and Luxor, and the Valley of the Kings. See our 8-day Classic Egypt tour.
- 9 to 12 days: add the Red Sea, Abu Simbel, Alexandria or the desert. See our 9-day Cairo, Nile cruise and Red Sea holiday.
Getting there from the UK
Flights from the UK to Cairo take around five hours, and there are also flights to the Red Sea resorts and, in some seasons, to Luxor. Our packages do not include international flights, so you can book the airline and airport that suit you, and we start the tour from your arrival. If you fly into one city and out of another, tell us and we will plan the itinerary around it.
Visas
Most UK visitors need a tourist visa, which can be bought online before travel or on arrival for many nationalities. Rules can change, so check the current requirements for your passport before you fly. Our airport representative meets you inside Cairo International Airport and helps with the arrival formalities.
Best time to go
October to April is the most comfortable, with warm days and cool evenings. May to September is very hot in Luxor and Aswan, but the sites are quieter and sightseeing starts early. Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest weeks; see our guide to Christmas in Egypt.
What a private package includes
Every package is private: your own Egyptologist guide and driver, so you set the pace. Each tour page lists exactly what is included and what is not, but typically:
- Airport meet and assist, and private transfers in an air-conditioned vehicle
- Hotels and, where listed, a Nile cruise and domestic flights
- Entrance fees for the sites in the itinerary
- A licensed Egyptologist guide for the sightseeing
- The meals listed in the itinerary
Not included: international flights, the Egypt visa, travel insurance, tips and personal expenses, plus any extras listed on the tour.
