Dahabiya Nile Cruise: What It Is, What It Costs and Is It Worth It?

A dahabiya Nile cruise is the slow, intimate way to travel the Nile. Instead of a large cruise ship with a hundred or more cabins, you sail on a traditional two-masted houseboat with only a handful of cabins, mooring at quiet riverbanks and islands the big ships cannot use. Here is what to expect and whether it is right for you.

What is a dahabiya?

Dahabiyas are elegant wooden sailing houseboats, modelled on the boats wealthy travellers used on the Nile in the 19th century. They carry only a small number of guests, so mealtimes feel more like a house party than a restaurant, and the sun deck is never crowded. They sail when the wind allows; when the breeze drops, a small tug tows the boat so the itinerary keeps moving.

Dahabiya or cruise ship?

  • Size: a dahabiya has a handful of cabins; a cruise ship can have a hundred or more.
  • Moorings: dahabiyas tie up at quiet banks and islands; big ships moor side by side at busy town landings.
  • Sites: both visit the main temples, but a dahabiya can stop at places most visitors never reach.
  • Facilities: dahabiya cabins are comfortable, en-suite and air-conditioned, but without the pool, shops or entertainment of a large ship. Wi-fi is limited or absent on most boats.
  • Price: a dahabiya costs more per night than a standard ship.

The route: Esna to Aswan

Our 4-night dahabiya cruise from Esna to Aswan covers:

  • Esna: the Temple of Khnum, whose ceiling has recently been cleaned to reveal bright colours.
  • El Kab: rarely visited rock tombs of early New Kingdom officials, with lively scenes of daily life.
  • Edfu: the Temple of Horus, the most complete temple in Egypt.
  • Gebel el-Silsila: the ancient sandstone quarries where much of the stone for Egypt’s temples was cut.
  • Kom Ombo: the riverside double temple of Sobek and Haroeris.

A private Egyptologist guide stays with you for the whole journey, and all meals are on board. The order of visits can shift slightly with wind and river conditions.

How much does a dahabiya cruise cost?

Our 4-night dahabiya cruise is from $1,390 per person for groups of 6 or more; couples and smaller groups pay more per person, as shown on the tour’s price table. Prices are in US dollars, full board, with a private Egyptologist. Compare our other Nile cruises or read how to choose a Nile cruise.

Who is a dahabiya right for?

  • Couples and honeymooners who want a quieter, more romantic trip.
  • Families or friends who would like the boat almost to themselves.
  • Travellers who prefer peace, scenery and lesser-known sites to big-ship facilities.

It is less suitable if you want a pool, evening entertainment or reliable wi-fi on board.

When to go

October to April has the most comfortable weather for sailing and sightseeing. Dahabiyas carry few guests, so popular dates fill early; book well ahead for Christmas, New Year and Easter.
