Tour Overview
The Tanoura show in Cairo is one of the city’s best-value evenings and a real local favourite. The Al Tannoura Egyptian Heritage Dance Troupe performs in the Al-Ghouri complex beside Al-Azhar, a group of buildings commissioned by Sultan al-Ghouri in the early 1500s. Under stone arches and carved wooden screens, musicians with drums, flutes and cymbals play Sufi-inspired music while dancers spin for minutes on end.
The highlight is the Tanoura dancer himself, turning steadily in layers of brightly coloured skirts that lift and fan out as he whirls, a practice rooted in Sufi devotion. Our representative meets you with your ticket, finds you a good seat and explains what the movements mean. A private driver takes care of the evening traffic, and afterwards you can stroll to Khan el-Khalili or head straight back to your hotel.

Itinerary
17:45 – Hotel pickup
Your driver and representative collect you from your hotel in Cairo or Giza. The drive into Islamic Cairo takes 20 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. On the way, the representative tells you about the Mamluk sultans and the Sufi traditions behind the dance, so the show makes more sense when it begins.
18:30 – Arrival at the Al-Ghouri complex
Walk through the old streets near Al-Azhar to the venue. Seating is unreserved, so arriving early matters: the representative collects your tickets and helps you find a good spot facing the stage. While you wait, look up at the stone arches and wooden mashrabiya screens around the courtyard.
19:30 – Tanoura performance
The show runs for about 90 minutes. Musicians open with drums, reed flutes and singing, and the troupe builds up through several dances before the main Tanoura performer begins to spin. Watch how the coloured skirts rise and separate as he turns. Photos without flash are allowed, but please stay seated.
21:00 – Return to your hotel
After the show, take a few photos in the courtyard, then walk back to your vehicle. If you would like tea in a café or a short stroll through Khan el-Khalili, a few minutes away, the representative can take you before the drive home. You are usually back at your hotel by 22:00.
Good to know: The troupe performs on set evenings each week, not every night, and schedules change for holidays and Ramadan. We confirm the dates when you book.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which nights does the show run?
The Al Tannoura troupe performs on set evenings each week, usually three or so, and the schedule can change around public holidays and during Ramadan. Tell us your dates when you book and we will confirm a performance night before taking payment, or suggest the closest alternative.
How long is the performance?
About 90 minutes, including music, group dances and the main Tanoura solo, which can last 15 minutes or more of continuous spinning. With transfers, the whole evening takes three to three and a half hours, depending on where your hotel is and how busy the roads are.
Can I take photos and videos?
Yes, photos and short videos without flash are usually allowed, and the coloured skirts make great pictures. Please stay in your seat and avoid blocking the view of others. Flash and tripods are not permitted during the performance, as they distract the dancers.
Is the show suitable for children?
Yes. Children tend to love the spinning skirts and the drums, and there is nothing unsuitable in the performance. Seating is on simple benches or chairs, and the show is fairly long for very young children, so sit near an aisle. Under-6s travel free.
